    WHAT IS LAMELLA CLARIFIER



    A Lamella Clarifier, also known as an inclined plate settler or parallel plate separator, is a highly efficient water treatment device designed to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and other particulate matter from liquid streams. It utilizes a series of inclined plates to create a large effective settling area within a compact footprint, significantly enhancing sedimentation performance compared to conventional clarifiers.

    The lamella clarifier operates on the principle of gravity sedimentation, where solids settle out of the liquid phase as it flows upward between closely spaced inclined plates. The settled solids slide down the plates into a sludge hopper for collection and disposal, while the clarified liquid overflows from the top of the unit.

    HOW DOES LAMELLA CLARIFIER WORKS

    The working principle of a lamella clarifier is based on the "shallow depth settling" theory, which states that particles settle more efficiently in a shallow depth compared to a deep basin. Here's a step-by-step explanation of the process:

    2.1 Feed Inlet and Flocculation (Optional)

    Raw water containing suspended solids enters the clarifier through an inlet distribution system. In many applications, the feed water first passes through an integrated flocculation tank where coagulants and flocculants are added. These chemicals cause fine suspended particles to aggregate into larger, heavier flocs that settle more easily.

    2.2 Flow Distribution

    The flocculated water then enters the inlet chamber and is evenly distributed across the width of the Lamella Plates through a specially designed distribution baffle or orifice system. This ensures uniform flow distribution and prevents short-circuiting, which is critical for optimal settling performance.

    2.3 Settling Between Inclined Plates

    The water flows upward through a pack of inclined plates (typically set at an angle of 55° to 60°). As the water rises, suspended particles and flocs settle by gravity onto the surface of each plate. The inclined plates provide a large effective settling area in a compact space – the total projected settling area equals the sum of the horizontal projection of all plates.

    2.4 Sludge Sliding and Collection

    Once particles settle on the plates, they slide downward along the inclined surface due to gravity, counter-current to the upward flow of water. The sludge slides into a sludge hopper or sludge collection zone at the bottom of the clarifier. From there, it is periodically or continuously discharged through a sludge outlet valve.

    2.5 Clarified Water Overflow

    The clarified liquid continues to rise to the top of the unit and is collected by overflow weirs or launders. The weirs are carefully leveled to ensure even collection and to prevent turbulence from disturbing the settling process. The clarified water then exits the unit for further treatment or discharge.

    2.6 Key Design Features

    • Lamella Plates: Made from materials such as PVC, polypropylene, FRP, or stainless steel, depending on the application and chemical compatibility.

    • Plate Angle: Typically 55°-60° to facilitate self-cleaning of settled solids.

    • Plate Spacing: Ranges from 25mm to 80mm, depending on the solids loading and settling characteristics.

    • Flow Distribution System: Ensures uniform flow across all plates for maximum efficiency.

    • Sludge Collection System: Conical hopper or scraper mechanism for efficient sludge removal.
